Administration Notes - May 2nd, 2001

  • Upgraded rogue to kernel 2.2.19 plus Andre Hedrick's IDE patches for UDMA 66.
  • Re-wired some of the power cables -- put rogue on the new MGE UPS, but haven't fully configured automated shutdown yet. At least the software successfully communicates with it.
  • Tried to get vmware to run under kernel 2.4.4, it won't. Complains that skb_datarefp is an undefined function. Hopefully vmware releases an udpate soon. Worked fine with 2.4.3.
  • kernel 2.4.4 finally fixed the USB keyboard problems I was having with keys being repeated, and missed occasionally.

Still working on the inventory system: host, part, and manufacturer management are all finished, the system just needs a non-administrative user interface now.

    Broadband, VMware and MP3's. :)

So I'm still waiting for our new DSL connection to be setup, which should be anytime now. istop.com emailed to let me know that they've decided to offer us the 6MBit service for the same price as the 3Mbit service, since we're only 400 meters from their POP. And they decided that since we're so close, they'd like to connect our loop directly to their POP instead of going through Bell Nexxia's equipment. Not sure I even understand that fully, but it sounds really good. :) Should be later this week, or early next week.

Been busy lately, working, spending time with the women in my life, and writing a new MP3 engine for enfusion-group.com. vFolders are neat, read about them here.

Lucy's doing well at puppy school, she's done her third week, and she's getting much more confident and nice around other doggies.

  • VMware finally released 2.0.4 which works with kernel 2.4.4. Yay! Didn't take them long.
  • The inventory system still doesn't have a front-end. ;)
  • I really, really, really need to get backups working again. I accidentally erased a 500 line script the other day, and almost had an emotional meltdown when I couldn't get it back. Did I mention that I need to resurrect a backup plan?

    Courier IMAP, PHP updates

  • Looks like a new version of Courier IMAP was released that fixed a small problem with creating INBOX.Draft folders. Upgraded on rogue.
  • DSL activation is slated for Wednesday May 16th. Waiting patiently.
  • Upgraded PHP to version 4.0.5, and added IMAP with SSL support from Pine 4.33's c-client library.

    MP3 Engine Enhancements

Been working on the MP3 Engine a lot, adding some new features:

  • A folder which organizes all songs into directories based on the first letter of the artist's name. It's generated on the fly, because the entire index of songs lives in a MySQL database.
  • The "Play All" button so that it builds an index of songs as an array as it generates the page. This way, "Play All" is guaranteed to play what you see on the screen, even in the search engine screens.
  • Can't add songs to vFolders which are already in there.
  • Made some modifications to the back end indexer so that after reindexing database, the mp3id's stored in each user's vFolders are still consistent.
  • Added "new" indicators to folders containing files that have been modified in the past 7 days, and to the files themselves.

    DSL Woes...

So I waited around today for my DSL activation; the Bell technician arrived around 11:00, and it took him about an hour and a bit to wire up a new data jack. After doing that, and then calling the central office to make sure that it was working, he left. In the meantime I called istop to find out where the modem was, and they said that they'd forgotten, and that I'd have to go pick it up. But their DSLAM is down today anyways, since a card inside it fried last night. They don't expect it back up until tomorrow morning.

Picked up the Alcatel DSL modem from istop, and plugged it in, but I can't tell if it's working or not, since the "line sync" light won't go solid until their DSLAM is fixed. Plus, istop thinks that Bell wired our place incorrectly, or didn't finish.

After all this, and waiting almost a full month for activation, they still haven't assigned me IP's, although last week, they claimed that they had them on file. So even if I had "line sync", I wouldn't be able to do anything anyways.

    Not impressed.

    To be continued tomorrow...

    Still waiting...

The 'sync' light is still flashing. The DSLAM was back online Thursday night, but somehow, given 4 days, they haven't managed to get me connected into the DSLAM yet. Would have been nice to have it connected for this weekend, but I guess it'll wait till sometime next week.

  • Updated MySQL on rogue to 3.23.38, broke webmail temporarily, then fixed it. I feel like MySQL 3.23.38 is slower than 3.22.32 that I was running before.

    Administration Notes - May 21, 2001

    Updates on rogue today:

  • OpenSSL to 0.9.6a from 0.9.5
  • OpenSSH to 2.9 from 2.5.2
  • Apache to 1.3.20 from 1.3.17
  • mod_ssl to 2.8.4 from 2.8.0
  • mod_perl to 1.25 from 1.24

    Lift Off!

DSL is here! Ralph Doncaster from istop.com and Doncaster Consulting came by last night to wire an RJ-11 cable off of the jack that Bell left. After doing that, and wiring me into the DSLAM, the modem finally sync'd.

Only trouble is, the Alcatel SpeedTouch Home modems don't seem to play perfectly with istop's DSLAM, and so my sync levels had to be locked in at 3Mbit for the time being, until istop installs their new DSLAM in a couple of weeks.

Getting close to 300kB/s inbound, and 85kB/s outbound, plus, reverse DNS records have been updated, and should propagate within the next few hours.
