Never touble trouble 'till trouble troubles you.

  • It's been a while, but I've been managing to get myself into quite a bit of mischief. About a week ago, while attempting to enable proxy-arp on my firewall/gateway system, I managed to ARP poison most of the machines on my ISP attached segment. Needless to say, I was unplugged for a few hours. :) But, after much futzing around, I managed to get it working. Now, all of my Internet accessible boxes are routed through my firewall/gateway system allowing me to do centralized firewall rule management, traffic shaping, QoS, and bandwidth monitoring. Details to follow.
  • Rogers sucks. They require any SMTP server connecting and issuing a MAIL FROM: <@rogers.com> or From: <@rogers.com> DATA segment to use SMTP AUTH, or they bounce the message complaining about misconfigured email settings. This affects both mailing list users, and those people who use email forwarders, as provided by iname.com. They can't fix it because their servers are outsourced to Compaq/Openwave, and they're "at their mercy". Riiiight.
  • Had a great weekend in Toronto this past weekend, got lots done, saw lots of family, and aside from hosting a colony of bacteria in my throat, it was a good time!

    Border Router traffic graphs.

  • I did actually manage to get proxy ARP and pseudo-bridging working, and as a fallout of that, I can now monitor all packets leaving or coming into my network at a central place. It also means that I can monitor traffic from both my links to and from my entire network from one place.
  • Graphs are here.

    Advisories and Updates

  • Been a bad couple of weeks for security advisories under Linux. First PHP, then OpenSSH, and then yesterday zlib, and anything that links against it statically or dynamically.
  • I've been noticing that a few foreign sites have been streaming MP3s off of me, specifically the Rock Star soundtrack. After some digging, I figured out that Google managed to index the Rock Star soundtrack on my site, and it shows up as item #7 if you search for "steel dragon mp3". While I applied access rules for the front page of the MP3 site, I hadn't gotten around to protecting all of the deeper pages, until yesterday.
  • Spent some time rearranging the computer room this weekend, it was getting out of control. :)

    Kelly Stevens (soon-to-be Chung), R.D.

  • Ever since I met Kelly almost four years ago, she's had the dream of becoming a Registered Dietitian. During the past couple of years, while we've been in Ottawa, she's pursued that dream, pushed herself to find jobs in Dietetics, network with other Dietitians in the area, and immerse herself in the profession. Even after her disappointment at not getting in her first two attempts, she has still been determined to make her application a stronger one by proving her skills, motivation and dedication to the field. I'm extremely happy to say that on Friday, she found out that she's been accepted!
  • Here's to never giving up, chasing your dreams down, and knowing that you've got the strength, and confidence to persevere and do anything you put your mind to. I'm proud of you!

    Traffic analysis per protocol.

  • Spent some time putting together some new network traffic graphs. I often look at my bandwidth graphs and wonder what's responsible for the bandwidth usage I see. So, after some modification to my iptables rules to account for various protocols, I've come up with these.
  • I've also created a summary page, combining per protocol graphs with overall traffic here.
