Easter Weekend

  • Busy weekend, went down to Toronto and got to visit both my family and Kelly's. Saturday we went back to Mid Valley Gardens to scope out some flower prices for the wedding, and have decided to go with them instead of our previous booking.
  • Not much happening on the computer front these days, looking for a cheap 1U rack server and KVM switches.
  • The move to Kanata for work has been fun, it's no longer a five minute walk to work now, it's about a twenty minute drive. :)

    panic room. :(

  • Ventured out for to see Panic Room. A disappointment for a film that's #1 at the box office right now. While mildy entertaining, thrillers where the main characters are just stupid severely irritate me. Definitely a rental.
  • Went to a Meals-On-Wheels piano benefit concert today which was very nice. Two performers were featured, the eldest being 91 years young. It was quite a performance, and very nice to see such a good turnout. Meals-On-Wheels hoped to raise $2000 and I hope that they succeeded.

The Ottawa Carleton UNIX Users Group.

  • After quite a period of inactivity, the OCUUG is attempting to become active again. Meetings are to be held at Exit Certified and start in May. If you're interested in UNIX and in the Ottawa area, be sure to check out the site and come out to the meetings.
  • I've been noticing that Samba has been consuming all available memory on my server if left alone. With some digging, I managed to track down a memory leak in smbd/password.c. Having worked around the problem, Samba is once again playing nice with respect to memory usage. Jeremy Allison has committed the fix to CVS for the upcoming 2.2.4 release.

    Analog, Digital, and Optical Transmissions.

  • After a trip to IStop.com's POP and co-location facilities in Ottawa last week, I realized how little I actually knew and understood about xDSL, digital signalling and optical networks. Actually, I also realized that I'd never really taken the time to understand or figure out how regular analog modems worked.
  • howstuffworks.com is a great resource for learning the basics about various things. I checked out their How DSL Works and How VDSL Works articles which then led me to CAP/DMT, QAM and optical networks. Actually, figuring out what QAM was all about also got me reading about FM, AM, and more traditional analog modulation techniques.
  • Cisco has some great documentation about optical networking gear and technologies, such as DWDM, as does this page.
  • Since most of these concepts are used ubiqitously throughout the telecommunications industry, I've found it interesting to find out more about them, and see how they're applied in slightly modified ways across various technologies, old and new.
  • I've added a few links to PDF's I've come across on my docs page.
