Aftermath...

  • Things are slowly starting to settle back down here, with the wedding over with, and people who were in town for it from abroad going back home, Kelly and I are trying to settle into a routine. She's pretty busy with the commute, and with her long hours in Barrie every day, and I have no idea what day of the week it is, since shift work does that to you. :) Last week was the week of seven consecutive grave yard shifts, although three were out in our new facility in Brampton, where there's not much happening yet.
  • This week is proving to be a bit quieter, and we're heading up to Oakville for the weened to babysit, and get away.
  • I somehow managed to burn out my video card the other day, I took my computer with me out to Brampton, and in between home and Brampton, the video card decided to stop working. Logic Computer House, where I bought it from, offers a 30 day in-store warranty, after which they'll send it back to the manufacturer on your behalf, and you have to wait a few weeks for it to come back. The night it burnt out I looked back to see when I'd bought it, and it happened that 30 days was the next day. Though Logic in Markham wouldn't replace it on Saturday because they don't have an onsite technician or service manager who works on the weekend, and so luckily the Mississauga store was nice enough to swap it for me. Although the Mississauga store swapped it, and managed to restore the little bit of faith I have in the store, there's something to be said for spending a bit more money, but actually having a decent in-store warranty to back the product up. I think my new store du-jour is Canada Computers. They've got good prices, a good number of stores, and a good variety and selection of products.
  • Have I mentioned that the Toronto Transit Commission sucks? They're losing money, and are now planning on raising rates to fund the new Sheppard subway line. That makes *so* much sense to me. Oh, let's build a new subway line that goes between Yonge St., and Don Mills, take years to build it, and spend more money than was budgeted, but make every TTC customer pay for it, even if they don't use it, because we can't financially plan our projects. You know, maybe if you sold Metropasses past the 5th day of the month, pro-rated or not, you'd actually make more money? After returning from our honeymoon on the 7th of October, and attempting to buy a Metropass, not only is every subway station sold out, but they're only technically on sale until the 5th business day of the month. Where is the logic in that? Is the TTC worried that the cost of having to print and distribute Metropasses after the 5th business day of the month which people *might* actually buy will need to be passed on to the customer as well? And they wonder why people still choose to drive down the DVP to work everyday. No amount of advertising that the money I save riding the TTC could buy me a big screen TV, or vacation, or tuition makes me feel any better about riding it. Thank goodness that I don't have to ride it during rush hour.
  • Lots has been changing on the computer front. mystique, my trusty server co-located at Q9 in Toronto is now running the full retail version of UT2003. Although the server is under spec'd for its role, it's handling it well. xavier, which used to be my Windows XP workstation has been converted to a Linux workstation, and toad, which used to be my Linux workstation has been converted to a Windows XP workstation. Surprisingly, the swap in roles, and hardware moves between the two computers has taken a long time to do.
  • Update wise, enfusion-group.com is now running Apache 1.3.27, PHP 4.2.3 and mod_ssl 2.8.12.
